I do like pillbox's, i just find it amazing that things like this can just be found anywhere really and that others are just hiding around a corner - just love finding places like this thanks for sharing.

Great work as usual NC. It's great to see the different building methods that were employed in constructing the different types of pillboxes. Keep up the good work

OK more updates. This next one is the Pillbox I too from the footpath to Sutton Courtney

3771739279_521b99e004_o.jpg

Head on view of the loophole from the meadow.

3771739029_8d3fbccfe6_o.jpg

Looking past towards the footpath where another I visited is.

3772545286_7a0371ea40_o.jpg

The back as you can see is quite overgrown with nettles. Might also worth noting there is no side loophole.

3772544732_7f523b9644_o.jpg

Looking past the front towards Sutton Bridge which can just be seen in the distance

3771738245_029c1ffabd_o.jpg

Inside seems to be deteriorating from the lump of concrete that has fallen out of the roof. the rest on th einside is much like others though the side chamber is full of crap.

3771737851_726fe13722_o.jpg

Last view of the back showing what you have to wade though to get in the pillbox. Ivy has been growing up the outside for a while as you can see.
Will post more photo's later of another two.

This one has been coverd befor by Newage but here are a few up todate photo's

3771733525_a542221b76_o.jpg

Quite well hidden this one and sits on th etop of a rise behind a rifle range, I came at it from the field side.

3771733929_22774dac0c_o.jpg

Th emain loophole

3771736755_e3578098ed_o.jpg

The entrance with an interesting raise for the doorway. The railings I think were used as part of the ROC post

.
3772542366_0164676b48_o.jpg

Reason for my thought on it's use as an part of the ROC post is because it had been converted for som ekind of habitation. The doorframes in th eplace are well fitted and the loopholes blocked up.

3772542170_2b726a6b2f_o.jpg

Doorway to the side chamber

3772539226_4a909e33d6_o.jpg

Some one had layed some carpet and it hay have had a loo as that is a loo roll holder on the post fixed to the wall

3772538736_c10985eccd_o.jpg

Even got a bed in the place

3771736199_d26c5d48d8_o.jpg

An old gate way by the side and if you look carefully you can see the ROC post entrance.

3771734503_d11438cb80_o.jpg

View od Didcot power station from the top. Studs can be seen sticking out of the pillbox roof so they must have held something down.

3772541288_44423edc64_o.jpg

Stove pipe sticking out shows it was used for something.

Next one is at Zouch farm up the road.

3771740057_cd22831c20_o.jpg

Taken from the track. It's used as a shed or storage as teh farm house id behind. I did not go round the otherside as I was in a hurry and saw no one to ask if it was ok.

3772546990_f2895fe836_o.jpg

Mani loopholeis bricked up leaving a small window. th eother loopholes seem to be windowed as well

3771739477_5629b8cd88_o.jpg

Best shot I could get showing the pillbox with out going to the farm and asking if I coul dgo in their garden.(another time)

3771739655_5d7fb73cb7_o.jpg

The front of the pillbox which faces towards Appleford rail bridge and a pillbox down there.
Thats it for this end of the river, I did go looking for one near Old Culham bridge but can old surmise it's gone.
Will post more when I get them.

God I love those 28's nice to see that the ROC made good use of one

Another weekend an another pillbox, this one is a trudge up from Goring and is at Gatehampton Bridge which the main London to Bristol line runs over. Bridge is built by Brunell though not as impressive as the one further along at Moulsford/Cholsey.

3842585247_427e609659_o.jpg

First look you will see if you walk along the Thames path from Pangbourn. Goring is about 32 miles ahead.

3842585003_82c443aacc_o.jpg

View from beside the river

3842584687_c67915065b_o.jpg

Closer view

3842583725_6f6c220c4b_o.jpg

AS you see it coming from Goring. It does lean something I have been noticeing more lately on others I come across

3842582595_764c94543e_o.jpg

Way in is right by the gate that takes rail workers up to the bridge

3842582921_bbd0a917d3_o.jpg

Not the cleanest one I have seen. Anglers seem to use it as a shit house as it stank and there was shit about the ground. Untill this weekend this was the worst I has seen.

3843373376_06b75198e2_o.jpg

Odd shot but this is Gatehampton bridge but is meant to give an idea to the gun emplacement which is on the other side of the trees on the bridge itself. The gun mount studs can be seen on the base as you go by on the train.
Still a few in this are ato get yet but will have to be another weekend
Ps sorry for the quality but you may notice a blur on some of them which is due to a smuge on the skylite filter I dicovered after I finised takeing th ephotos and was nearly back at he car.

Another couple from round Pangbourne area the first is just up from Whitchurch lock

3941265313_de43042cce_o.jpg

You can just make the loophole out in the branches, it was taken from the opposite side as you can see, a further visit is needed to get more photos

3941266025_246cd237ba_o.jpg

This emplacement is on Heartlock island near Beal trust

3942047392_4ddd45a8ee_o.jpg

Another shot showing the end of teh island where it is.

3942047706_0115848daa_o.jpg

This is the other end where I am told there is another emplacement or half built pillbox which is yet to be confirmed, basicly I need a boat to get there

time to buy/hire/steal etc. a boat mate lol...Great stuff as always NC any idea what the emplacement housed

The one you see on Hearstlock Island had a 6 pounder gun the othere end I could not say, it's onlt word of mouth from some one who has been there that there is some thing showing under the shrubbery. I've now located another pillbox not far away and will be going after that soon

All good stuff mate. There cannot be many left that you haven't covered along the thames

Hi Guy's I have been on my walks again by the river down near Gatehampron bridge I'll start there even though I posted photo's of it before.
4040576492_345a3d7bc3_o.jpg

Here you can see s side shot of the Gatehapton bridge pillbox now that the growth has been cleared away. From here it's about a mile to the next pillbox.

4040580104_88a1f767d7_o.jpg

A view of the next pillbox from the Thames path

4039826123_8ed26fbd13_o.jpg

The way down, as you see it's let into the bank though I think it has got like that over the years

4039826691_20106cef73_o.jpg

Front view

4039827273_52ba207fbb_o.jpg

View through loophole, as you can see leaves and no doubt soil are building up inside

4040578242_aa675b7434_o.jpg

Entrance and pistol hole at the back.

4040578572_d153716f7e_o.jpg

This amy be the pillbox number

4039828053_c22edfa108_o.jpg

Inside showing that corrugate iron sheet was used in the casting of the inside

4040579426_449a561bd2_o.jpg

Lastly a shot through the loophole showing the river Thames and the trees which have grown in the last 70 odd years. I did look for this pillbox from the other side of the river but as you can see it is well hidden by branches..
Nearly done now only a couple more to get to complete what I no is along the Thames though I still have to visit some at Pangbourne which I photographed from the road opposite. more can be seen on my Flickr page.
If it is of any interest to people I have posted a couple of photo's from each on Panoramio and plotted them on Google earth this also includes the other pilboxes I have captured as well. Some do show up on Google eath as well in Panoramio.

Mother nature is certainly trying to hide that type 24 and doing a good job at that. I'm not surprised that you couldn't see it from the other bank of the river NC. Great stuff as always mate. What you got planned to do when you finish the next couple is what I'm wondering...

Ok guy's I have finally reached the end and taken photo's of the last two at the Clifton Hampden. On is along the Clifton cut which takes the Thames to the lock the other is on the Thames itself. Both are on an Island formed by the cut.

4061202413_d4c3967a3c_o.jpg

First one along the cut. I did consider going over to the island but there were lot's of cattle grazing in the field, when I saw the box had been bricked up I was glad I did not. Could not see the entrance so can't comment further.

4061948654_8177f4200a_o.jpg

Wider view of the pillbox

4061203431_77f8dd0b6f_o.jpg

The last one on the list, taken from the Thames near the Clifton Cut. I took this on full zoom so I need to revisit from the other side at some time. In All I have taken photo's and visited 45 from Pangbourne to Culham There may be one more near Goring but until all the leaves have fallen then I won't know. I do intend to try and visit some I have not managed to get to yet and will post photo's then.
What's next? well I intend to do the ones Fluffy featured, carry on up the stop line from Appleton which I started with Batroy , then there is the Blue line along the Kennet which is producing to good finds and there is one in Wales I noticed the other day. It's been a hard job with finding some of them but I hope you have enjoyed reading the thread and thanks for looking.

Small update on the last two, I took some photo's from a different angle today.

4086800368_ea2245025a_o.jpg

Taken from across the Thames near Little Wittenham

4086799802_c583c2c7a5_o.jpg

Better view of the door showing steps leading into it

4086799402_825277285c_o.jpg

Door and pistol loophole. From here is looks in great condition but I hav enot been inside.

4086043915_f1da559289_o.jpg

This is the one that can be seen from across the Clifton Cut as seen from the wear pool down from it

4086798916_ed13c53a74_o.jpg

Closer view of the Clifton Cut one showing clearly it has been blocked up. Could not see the door from the cut as there was a bush in the way but it looks like it's deteriorated a bit.
More updates as I manage to visit the Pangbourne ones

Nice one Mr Crawler,i can confirm that the doorway is blocked up as well,i think that there is a small gap that allows its use as a bat box.BUT, as i mentioned before,DO NOT attempt a closer view or the TATOO'd MAN will, in all probability, RIP UR BLOODY HEAD OFF !!!:icon_evil:)

He does not own the island he only owns the fishing rights, there is little he can do if the farmer gives his permission, Mind you I never saw any one when I looked over the gate. Not a lot of point in going on there as I have got what I needed now. Where to next:)
