CLYDACH ROC NUCLEAR MONITORING POST
Hey! this is my first post in a while, so here it goes....
Clydach ROC post is in my local vicinity, so i thought id go and have a mosey. i know many people have started threads on this particular location but its so hard to find something that someone hasn't already done a report on these days.
Date opened May 1962
Date closed September 1991
Royal Observer Corps Monitoring Posts are underground structures all over the United Kingdom, constructed as a result of the Corps' nuclear reporting role and operated by volunteers during the Cold War between 1955 and 1991.
In all but a very few instances the posts were built to a standard design consisting of a 14-foot-deep access shaft, a toilet/store and a monitoring room. The most unusual post was the non-standard one constructed in a cellar within Windsor Castle.
Around 1600 were built, Almost half of the total number of posts were closed in 1968 during a reorganization and major contraction of the ROC. Several others closed over the next 40 years as a result of structural difficulties (persistent flooding, or regular vandalism) The remainder of the posts were closed in 1991 when the majority of the ROC was stood down following the break-up of the Communist Bloc. Many have been demolished or adapted to other uses but the majority still exist, although in a derelict condition.
Some good info on ROC posts here.
Observer Post
Anyway that's enough info... Now on with the report!! (PIC HEAVY)
I have known about this place for a while but never really been, 30 odd minuets on google earth and i found it. So i packed my camera and torch and headed off to explore.
When i arrived at the site the way to the hatch wasn't to much of a scramble, although covered in brambles and thorns.
All surface features remain intact with the light green paint in good condition, and as a bonus, (although i had doubts when i seen the padlock) the hatch is open!
So i descended the ladder (with a little bit of fear as i have never been to a site like this and descend on my own)
Internally little much remains including table, shelf, two chairs, wooden crates, WB1401 Carrier Receiver with WB1410 filter unit (may be mistaken), Tele-Talk, a kettle and a tin opener!
Apparently chris and emily where here at some point too.
After taking some photos i decided to ascend and leave as a police van was circling the area with a cop on the roof of the van for some odd reason haha!
On the way there i spotted a abandoned farm so i popped my head in for a nose and will do a report on that when i find out more info on it.
So that concludes my report on this particular ROC post, I hope you enjoyed it as much as i did
Thanks for reading and any comments are welcome, peace out.
