I discovered this location from Simon Kitchin’s excellent book “Photographing North Wales”. Below is a description of the quarry from the the book.
“Cwmorthin is a disused slate mine found on the shores of Llyn Cwmorthin above the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. It has a long and complex history beginning in the early 1800's, with heavy underground development starting around 1860. The quarry gained a reputation for poor working conditions and was known locally as "The Slaughterhouse". Between 1875 and 1886 there were 22 deaths in Cwmorthin out of a workforce of around 550. It closed in 1997”.
