Kilcooley House

Kilcooley Abbey is described as a large winged house, built in 1790 by Sir William Barker for the Baroney family. A huge fire partly destroyed the property causing it having to be reconstructed in 1840, during which the family occupied the old abbey. The interior mostly dates from after the fire. After being bought fifteen years ago by a developer with plans for the entire estate, the aims fell through and the house has been vacant since. It sits behind a historic, perimeter wall in picturesque landscape, crumbling in deterioration every year it remains neglected.

Saw this one on some Irish groups with an attempted codename. Noted it and we visited on our Summer trip to Ireland, on a day dedicated to these beautiful manors in the countryside.

The front is very impressive, especially the stone bears guarding the sweeping staircase leading up to the main entrance.

We started in the South wing of the premises, but were steadily attracted towards the green glow from one room in particular, like moths to a flame.

As we reached the middle block of the manor, the decay increased dramatically.

Entrance hall. Eventually, we gave up resisting the temptation of the glow. Simply sublime!

That's all for the photographs. Here is the link to the documentary styled video we filmed at this manor. Check it out if you're interested:

Thanks for reading :)

What a beautiful manor, wishing this will be rescued. Intricate details on walls and ceilings are just amazing. The beautiful facade clearly gives us a good picture of her former glory. Great pics and report.

Yet another elegant handrail to the main staircase. What was the green? Mould, or the remains of paint or wallpaper? I've heard that the green colour in old wallpaper was made from arsenic. Don't lick it.

My ancestors were Palatines who were brought from the Rhineland Palatinate in Germany c.1709 to England and Ireland. They were much sought-after by the landed gentry in Ireland because of their farming skills, and being Protestant was a bonus. The lands around Kilcooly House was where they established themselves. It’s quite sad to see such magnificence diminished to such a terrible state.

That is a beautiful house. Love the architectural details. Shame it's been left to decay. Thank you for the great photos and the info.
