It's my duty to report to those of a cemeterial bent that, finally, Newtown Road Cemetery in Newbury is open to the public.
It was closed in 2000 for that always most inexplicable reason, health and safety - possibly due to a roof tile falling off the chapel once. I don't know, but I do know that an enormous branch did fall off a cedar tree in the cemetery last year, and its remains are still there under the tree.
Whatever, it was quietly reopened just the other day. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't spotted a tiny piece inside one of the free things which mysteriously drop through the letterbox on a Sunday.
It's certainly worth visiting this classic Victorian cemetery if you're anywhere nearby. Here are a handful of sights:
I've only ever seen this sort of thing in this cemetery
It's called delamination
A novel jewellery idea
I'm defeated by this one. Any ideas?
Humbly submitted,
Alan
