The building played a key role in WW2 and the Cold War.

Caversham Park was built in 1850 to replace an earlier manor house which had been destroyed by a fire.

BBC Monitoring was set up in 1939 to monitor Nazi broadcasts, and was initially based in a set of shacks in Wood Norton, Worcestershire, by 1943 it had commandeered Caversham Park, which was being used as a hospital at the time.

BBC Monitoring transcribed and summarised 240 broadcasts into an 80,000 word document.

Following the war, the department played a key role in defusing the Cuban Missile Crisis during the Cold War in 1962.

BBC vacated the building in 2018 and it remains empty with plans to convert the manor house into a carehome.
