Wow! What a beautiful house. so much history ,and the features are breathtaking. No history to this place, because I choose not to disclose it. Love this site for that reason. Many of you will know this property, Has to be the most amazing place I have ever visited. On leaving, myself and a friend were confronted by an aggressive local. Why not secure the one and only entrance, if , it means so much!? surely that would be your intention ! The house is now being restored, and I'm so pleased it is!

The building and its grounds remind me of the 1880 country house in Devon that was my main childhood home - Bossell in Buckfastleigh. Hill House is a lot more ornate, but it has a similar main staircase. I smiled at the false fireplace, built immediately under a window. And am amused to see that the book open beside the horse-bodied doll had "Paths of Happiness" as a chapter or book title, with the first line of the left hand page, "democratic State of England, violence never pays". It goes on, "But to return to Parliament, it is xxx a source of happiness to take one's part in the work of the House of Lords . . ."

Looking online Lord (General Jack Seely) Mottistone wrote a book with the same title in 1938. Most likely his book then. It gives an idea to who lived in Hill House at one time.

The 4 Feb 1953 copy of the Daily Mail is a stark reminder of the 1953 North Sea floods (a combination of very high tides and strong winds - not 'manmade' global warming). And Chiang Kai Chek tells the West he does not need foreign aid for his fledgling anti-Communist Formosa - now Taiwan. While the Korean War is in progress.

Once again, a fine collection of photographs taking us back in time. Thank you.
